POSITION TITLE:  BUS DRIVER

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

To transport students safely, efficiently and economically to and from school on a daily basis and to extracurricular events on a non-regular basis.

 

FLSA:  Non-Exempt

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

    1. High school graduate or GED certificate.
    2. Submit at least two references attesting to the applicant’s ability, character, and       

    personal qualifications.
    3. Meet school bus driver certification requirements:
         a. Minimum hours of instruction.
         b. Satisfactory pass knowledge examination.

    4. Meet state requirements for appropriate licensing.
    5. Meet state physical examination requirements.
    6. Meet county and state standards for driving test.
    7. Meet county and state standards for driver record check.
    8. Ability to operate all vehicle types used in transporting students.
    9. Ability to operate radio communication.

 

REPORTS TO:  SUPERVISOR OF TRANSPORTATION.  Each driver shall be directly responsible to the Principals of the school he or she serves on matters related to student discipline and patron relations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. To conduct pre-trip inspection of school bus prior to every trip for defects and post-trip inspection after every trip.
  2. To use established routes and designated bus stops.
  3. To operate bus on approved time schedule.
  4. To report bus accidents and student injuries to authorities or as directed.
  5. To conduct emergency evacuation drills in keeping with the school division regulations.
  6. To instruct riders regarding being responsible passengers.
  7. To drive defensively under varying traffic conditions and inclement weather.
  8. To drive with safety of students as first priority.
  9. To report personal absences in time for Supervisor to secure substitute driver.
  10. To perform bus housekeeping duties inside and out.
  11. To maintain proper fuel level and monitor all gauges.
  12. To report bus defects to Supervisor.
  13. To establish favorable working relationships with other drivers, maintenance personnel, teachers, student, and Principals.
  14. To exhibit positive image as a loyal representative of the school division.
  15. To demonstrate knowledge of county and state vehicular laws.
  16. To deal with exuberant behavioral characteristics of youthful riders.
  17. To administer disciplinary procedures in keeping with school board policies and administrative regulations.
  18. To be alert and exercise good judgment concerning emergencies, disabled vehicles, and irregular special request by parents or riders.
  19. To comply with dress code.
  20. To perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Transportation or designee.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

One hundred eighty (180) day contract with compensation and benefits approved by school board policies and regulations.

 

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated by the Supervisor of Transportation or designee in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of support personnel.
