Position Title:                           Librarian

Terms of Employment:              210 days / 10.5 months

Supervisor:                              Principal or Designee

FSLA Status:                            Exempt

Minimum Salary:                      $45,529

 

 

General Description:

Responsible for the organization and management of the school’s collections of various print and digital materials, as well as leading and/or collaborating on lessons and other activities that support the instructional objectives of the individual school.

 

Education and Experience:

Hold professional license with a specific endorsement in Library Media K-12.  Broad knowledge and experience in teaching, media programs, management, and administration of library/media services.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • To select and acquire materials to reinforce the curriculum and meet the individual interest, ability and maturity levels of students through research, selection aids, reviews, recommendations, teacher requests, SOL’s, etc.
  • To organize and distribute all media and audio-visual equipment for effective use.
  • To participate in curriculum planning and program development and implementation to develop a close professional relationship among Teachers, Principals, and other Media Librarians.
  • To create an attractive environment and atmosphere that encourages students and teachers to use the media center.
  • To stimulate and guide students in all phases of their reading, viewing, and listening, so that they may effectively assimilate information.
  • To provide instruction, in cooperation with the staff, in media and resource skills.
  • To provide media center experiences to help students develop personal relationships, social attitudes, and vocational interests.
  • To conduct with teachers and volunteer personnel (adult and student) in-service and other staff development activities in the use of multimedia equipment and materials.
  • To acquaint the staff and students with the media collection and with new materials.
  • To assist the Principal in ensuring that instructional materials and equipment are used to provide learning experiences compatible with the educational needs of students.
  • To trouble-shoot technology and computer problems.
  • To supervise Librarian Assistant.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use a telephone to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; to hear, understand speech, and speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly at normal levels indoors and on the telephone. Physical agility to drive, bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, crawl, walk, push, pull, and reach overhead. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of effective instructional practices; child and adolescent development; the teaching and learning process; teaching special populations of students (e.g., ELLs, Gifted, SWDs, etc.); appropriate classroom management techniques within a Response to Intervention/ Multi-tiered System of Support framework.  Skilled at developing and maintaining positive interpersonal relationships with students, parents, and colleagues; excellent oral and written communication. Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and an education reflective of cultural awareness and responsiveness; ability to integrate technology into curriculum and instruction; ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school based staff, students, parents and community members. 

 

Requirements

  • Minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Transcripts - Applicants must provide both undergraduate and graduate transcripts; unofficial transcripts are acceptable with the application.
  • References - Applicants must submit two (2) written references; references should be from a current or previous supervisor. References from a supervising teacher or professor are acceptable when there is no relevant prior work history. Applicants may use the Nottoway County Public Schools reference form that is incorporated in the online application or a signed, dated letter of reference.
  • Teacher Assessment Scores (e.g., Praxis II, etc.)
  • Copy of Teaching License

  • Successful outcomes of the following background investigations/tests are required before any offer of employment can be finalized:

            o    Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal History Investigation

            o    State Police Criminal History Investigation

            o    Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigation

            o    Tuberculosis Screening/Test
