GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Substitute Nurses are utilized to oversee the School Nurse's Office, on an as-needed basis for the current school year.

PREFERRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Nursing degree from an accredited college or university. 
  • Bachelor of Nursing Degree preferred. 
  • Minimum of two years nursing experience required and experience in community health, emergency care and triage, and/or a physician’s office is preferred.
  • CPR/AED Certified (adult and child). 
  • Must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia and be in good standing with the Virginia Board of Nursing.

ESSENTIAL JOBS FUNCTIONS:

  • Implements required health care, developmental, and other screenings per state requirements; evaluates findings, refers and follows up as required by law and School Board policy.
  • Initiates referral to parents, school personnel or community health resources for intervention, remediation, and follow through.
  • Administers first aid and emergency care; treats minor accidents and health emergencies; contacts emergency services and parents when necessary; performs first aid and CPR until help arrives.
  • Administers daily and PRN (as needed) medications and nursing care procedures prescribed by the student's physician; performs treatment procedures following physician/licensed health care provider instructions and procedural guidelines while observing for possible drug reactions and/or side effects.
  • Advises administrators, teachers, and cafeteria staff on all students with food allergies according to FERPA; obtains care plans for students with food allergies and advises school personnel in recognizing the signs of food allergies and the appropriate steps to take, including the administration of epinephrine.
  • Notifies the parent/guardian of illness or accident of students and provides information to parents/guardians suggesting referral of students, when necessary, to the primary medical care providers for evaluation with treatment and follow-up for suspected health problems.
  • Interprets the health status of students to parents and school personnel.
  • Documents all skilled nursing care, procedures, assessments, contacts made, medication administered, etc.; keeps a daily record of all students seen in the clinic/receiving medical service.
  • Follows procedures for suspected cases of child abuse and neglect. 
  • Ensures adequate supplies and equipment are maintained in the school clinic; checks first aid supplies and equipment daily; secures and monitors medications, including controlled substances, as required by law and School Board policy.
  • Provides emergency or immediate First Aid, initiates the incident, accident reports and follow-up on all personnel injured on school property.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, NCPS policy and administrative regulation.
  • Ensures compliance with existing applicable federal and state statutes and local policies, regulations and guidelines related to public schools.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Other Job Functions:

  • Abide by state statutes, school board policies and regulations.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation.
  • Leave detailed notes for the School Nurse on any issues experienced during the day.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Principal, or the Administrator.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use a telephone and to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; to hear, understand speech, and speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly at normal levels indoors and on the telephone. Physical agility to drive, bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, crawl, walk, push, pull, and reach overhead. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

SALARY RANGE:

  • Regular Sub:
    • $90 (non-degreed) / $100 (4-yr degree)
  • Long-Term Sub:
    • After 20 consecutive days in a single class
    • $90 (non-degreed) / $100 (4-yr degree)
  • *Substitutes are paid monthly. 

LOCATION:

To be determined based on need.

  • Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal History Investigation
  • State Police Criminal History Investigation
  • Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigation
  • Tuberculosis Screening/Test
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license
