General Description
Provides comprehensive assessment to determine impairment, provide therapeutic/intervention services, to develop and implement treatment plans for appropriate alternative communication systems in pre-K-12.
Qualifications
Must hold a valid license as a speech-language pathologist issued by the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (BASLP).
Essential Job Functions
The speech/language pathologist functions as a member of the student's educational team. The speech/language pathologist is responsible for the development of effective communication skills in those students identified as speech/language impaired. This position requires expertise in the diagnosis and remediation of communication disorders, provision of therapy for students with a wide range of disabilities, ongoing data collection and maintenance of Documentation of Service Logs and the ability to work with computers, adaptive equipment, and assistive technology. Additionally, consultation with general educators is required. It involves organization of the child study process and completion of all required components and forms to determine eligibility for special education within federal/state/county guidelines. It includes development of action plans for students not formally identified as speech/language impaired.
- Assesses communication disorders including test selection, administration, interpretation and formal report writing
- Implements the entire referral process to determine a student's eligibility for special education services within federal state/county procedural guidelines
- Provides speech/language therapy in accordance with a written educational plan for students with a wide range of physical, emotional, and/or cognitive impairments
- Develops therapeutic plans for intervention within a range of therapy service models and as a member of an inter/transdisciplinary team(s)
- Communicates orally and in writing with parents, school personnel, and outside agency professionals
- Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence.
- Performs other duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Hearing ability sufficient to evaluate a student's speech.
- Skill communicating verbally and in writing with students, faculty members, and parents so that all parties understand the program and the degree of progress being made.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use a telephone; to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; to hear, understand speech, and speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly at normal levels indoors and on the telephone. Physical agility to drive, bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, crawl, walk, push, pull, and reach overhead. Requirements
- Minimum of 18 years of age.
- Transcripts - Applicants must provide both undergraduate and graduate transcripts; unofficial transcripts are acceptable with the application.
- References - Applicants must submit two (2) written references; references should be from a current or previous supervisor. References from a supervising teacher or professor are acceptable when there is no relevant prior work history.
