POSITION TITLE:  

Reading Specialist

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

11 months / 220 days / 8 hours per day

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Plans, delivers and evaluates instruction based upon specific standards and objectives established by Nottoway County Public Schools. Responsible for providing direct instruction to students, individually or in small groups, to enable students to develop literacy skills. As a literacy leader, the position is responsible for implementing a comprehensive literacy program through coaching, supporting, and guiding teachers in best practices for literacy instruction.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must possess a Master’s degree and be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement as a Reading Specialist. 
  • Three (3) years of successful classroom teaching experience in which the teaching of reading was the primary responsibility, required.

 

*A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Diagnoses and identifies students with deficiencies in language arts.
  • Plans and delivers instruction to students identified as having deficiencies in these areas.  
  • Uses the curriculum of the district, including those resources approved for remediation purposes, to plan daily instructional activities.
  • Closely monitors the progress of the students.
  • Collaborates with the administration and staff in planning for the instructional needs of all students.
  • Participates in ordering and disseminating language arts materials.
  • Oversees all language arts assessments and documentation procedures as prescribed by the Virginia Department of Education and Nottoway County Public Schools. 
  • Models instructional strategies and best practices for teachers.
  • Coordinates tutorial services.
  • Plans and implements motivational programs to promote reading.
  • Coordinates informational programs on reading and writing for parents.
  • Attends school based data meetings for discussions regarding reading and achievement
  • Reviews PALS data for additional areas of need and support
  • Works closely with Title I Reading teachers to provide additional support, resources and training
  • Provides training to teachers in effective reading strategies
  • Conducts walk throughs to examine areas of reading need and support (non evaluative)
  • Attends monthly Reading Specialist/Lead Teacher meetings and disseminates information and instructional strategies to the staff in a timely manner. 
  • Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence.
  • Performs other duties as established by the supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

Knowledge of NCPS curriculum and techniques for integrating curriculum, NCPS policies and effective instructional practices; knowledge of the needs of students requiring remedial reading instruction; thorough understanding of the teaching and learning process; ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education; ability to infuse technology into curriculum; ability to guide and train teachers in effective techniques and strategies; ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school based staff, students, parents and community; ability to use diagnostic data to tailor instruction to meet the needs of the student(s); excellent organizational, communication, and human relations skills.

 

REPORT PREPARATION:

Develops and submits written reports regarding status of any of the aforementioned specific job functions.

 

EQUIPMENT OPERATION:

Uses a personal computer, chromebook and/or laptop, standard office equipment, and other equipment related to the assigned area. Uses various software programs to support financial forecasting, performing calculations, and other financial projections and processes as well as word processing and presentation creation.

 

CONTACTS:

Contacts are made at all levels within and outside the school system and require the handling of highly sensitive information with the general public.

 

DECISION MAKING:

Responsible for independent decision making, based upon professional judgment. Decisions impact the entire school division and extend into the community.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use a telephone and to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; to hear, understand speech, and speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly at normal levels indoors and on the telephone. Physical agility to drive, bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, crawl, walk, push, pull, and reach overhead.
